The original designer - Who is Harry Bertoia?
Born in Italy in 1915, Harry Bertoia studied the arts in Detroit before opening a metalwork and jewellery workshop at the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art. He struck gold during the 1950s with his groundbreaking Harry Bertoia Wire Side Chair, widely recognised as one of the major achievements in mid-century modern design.

Bertoia’s influence on the modernist era goes beyond his own designs – he helped Charles Eames develop the plywood bending methods Eames went on to pioneer in the famous Eames chairs.
