How to encourage growth of beneficial bacteria in your pond?

Larger surface area – Adding plants or rocks will increase the surface area available for beneficial bacteria to colonise.
Pond aeration – Higher levels of dissolved oxygen in the pond water enables the beneficial bacterial to appropriately cycle nutrients. Air Pumps such as PondMAX PA80, Resun LP60 or Aquascape 61016 [link] can assist with aerating the pond of varied volumes.
Limit organic matter in your pond – While beneficial bacteria break down the dead organic matter, having too much of it will result in them not being able to decompose it quickly enough. Hence regularly skimming fallen leaves, twigs and dead insects is critical for pond health. Skimmers units, provides an effective solution.
Avoid sudden water quality changes – Sudden changes to pH, Oxygen level or temperature may kill sensitive nitrifying bacteria in the pond.
Providing more shade for the pond’s surface by adding surface plants such as water lilies will reduce the direct sunlight received by the pond and in turn protecting beneficial bacteria. When the pond water becomes too warm, the oxygen levels drop which can harm your fish population and beneficial bacteria.
