From the moment fans first set eyes on the ghost that walks in his 1936 comic debut, they were captivated by the mysterious costumed crime-fighter. Unlike other superheroes, the Phantom relies entirely on his own natural strength, intelligence and enigmatic immortality. The iconic hero is often credited as the first costumed superhero, being the first to feature white, pupil-less eyes behind their mask.

During the comic’s early years, the colour of The Phantom’s suit widely varied. The Red suit Phantom is a recreation of his appearance in Italy in the L’Uomo Mascherato series, and Turkey, in which he is better known as “The Red Mask.” Lee Falk, the creator of The Phantom, orignally envisioned the suit as gray, but over time changed the suit to purple.
