Showcasing strong, bold strokes representing Bush Medicine dreaming, the talent of Gloria Petyarre - perhaps the most famous living Aboriginal artist - transforms this humble cushion from ordinary to iconic.

A hugely influential figure in contemporary Australian art, Gloria Petyarre was involved in the Utopian art movement way back in the 1970s, translating traditional stories into designs on silk batik, before taking up the brush with acrylics on canvas from 1989.

Gloria Petyarre is the custodian of an array of Dreaming stories, including the Pencil Yam, bean, Emu, and Mountain Devil Lizard, and her easily recognisable paintings feature curved lines representing her Bush Medicine Dreaming.

A winner of the prestigious Wynne Prize and the first Aboriginal person to win a major prize from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, today you'll find Petyarre's paintings in galleries and private collections the world over - and on cool cushions at Matt Blatt.
