Jean Prouve (1901 - 1984)
“Never design anything that cannot be made”
Primarily an engineer, Jean Prouve was born in France in 1901, and later fell into design because of his love of experimenting with metal. The son of artists, he was trained as a metal worker before attending engineering school. His foray into design came about due to his skill of creating and his talent for manipulating materials, and his designs were always focused primarily on material rather than form.
A legend in the design world, his success was relatively noncommercial, although today the Jean Prouve museum in Nancy, France, continues Prouve’s legacy.
